After a deadly COVID-19 experience, Parna & family could finally make a trip to a place close to our heart – Darjeeling. In this article, we have discussed some of the best restaurants in Darjeeling, where she and her friends managed to visit during her 2 and a half day stay in Darjeeling before travelling to other lesser known spots in North Bengal Tourism. Here follows below her account:

Picturesque Darjeeling’s Food Scene – The best choice for the foodies exploring North Bengal Tourism

Darjeeling, a part of the North Bengal Tourism, undoubtedly offers one of the most spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga peak, but the food scene there is pretty interesting. There are very few travel destinations where you get outstanding qualities of fusion cuisine. Be it the continental food reminding of its colonial past, Nepali cuisine, Oriental spread along with the quintessential Bengali Alu Posto, Bhaat and Daal, or shuddh shakahari platter (Jain Cuisine) –  Darjeeling food trips would offer you all.

Since visiting Darjeeling has become our yearly ritual, we sample food in different eateries. However, we could try out only four places this year because we stayed in Darjeeling for a couple of days before heading to Barmaik.

On reaching Darjeeling, we had lunch in Glenary’s, dinner back in our hotel Alice Villa, next day’s breakfast in Hot Stimulating Café, lunch in Park Hotel, and dinner again at the same place. Yes!! That’s Darjeeling! And these are just a handful of the best restaurants in Darjeeling. We had a brunch in Keventer’s on the last day before moving out to our next destination. Let’s talk about each of these astounding eateries in Darjeeling.

1. Glenary’s (A must visit spot in the North Bengal Tourism for the Gourmets)

The Glenary’s was established by an Italian named Vado during the Colonial Era. It might have been one of the most popular eating places along with the Keventer’s where the British used to go back then. Later it was bought by the Edwards Family and rechristened to Glenary’s.

The family worked to preserve the colonial heritage of this eatery and divided it into three units – a restaurant upstairs, a bakery on the ground floor and a pub in the basement. The seating arrangements are aesthetically made with a view of Kanchenjunga on clearer days. It appears as if you have time travelled and entered a British eatery during the pre-independence days.

A must stop in North Bengal Tourism for food lovers P.C: KolkataFusion

We had our lunch here after a tiring train journey. The glasses of fresh lime soda and chilled beer refreshed our senses. We had ordered Fried Fish and French fries for the kids along with steamed rice with chicken, veggies and mushroom, roasted pork, bread and beef cutlets for us. Our children instantly liked the Fried Fish because they had no hints of chillies and the upper coat was as thin as possible with a fat chunk of the delicate fish piece underneath.

The steamed rice with chicken, veggies and mushrooms was quite an interesting revelation for us. It presented a healthy main dish with subtle flavours but incredibly delectable – a near cousin to the chicken pishpash may be.

We were so busy eating that we couldn’t take a photo then. Here’s presenting Roasted Pork of Glenary’s from Trip Advisor’s gallery.

The Roasted Pork and Beef Cutlet were beautiful delights to our taste buds. The meats were tender, well done with measured spices in it.

On our way back to our hotel, we bought Apple Pie, Blueberry Cheesecakes, a brownie and chocolates from the famed Glenary’s bakery to treat ourselves during the evening.

2. Hot Stimulating Café

(This discovery has made this cafe one of the personal favourites amongst the best restaurants in Darjeeling)

The following day, we went out for a walk around the Darjeeling Mall and Observatory Hill. We had a plan to try out the new eatery (lesser-known) near the Shrubbery Nightingale Park in Richmond Hill before moving to the Darjeeling Zoo.

The Entrance of Hot Stimulating Cafe – for the homemade sausage lovers exploring North Bengal Tourism P.C: KolkataFusion

We all were quite hungry as we reached the Café. The uphill walk made us yearn more and more for a hearty breakfast. However, we felt at home on entering this quaint café. It is run by a Tibetan, Yapla Rumba and his family. He said that his ancestors settled in Darjeeling long back, even before the Chinese invasion of Tibet. He treated us to homemade sausages, home-baked burger sandwiches, soupy noodles (no, not Thukpa) and delicious piping hot coffees.

Soupy Noodles and Burger in Hot Stimulating Cafe P.C: KolkataFusion

The open-air seating arrangements helped us soak the warm sun while silently appreciating the green hills lying afar. The family maintained a small garden with blooming colourful flowers swaying their heads with every cool breeze swiping through them.

The Hot Stimulating Café also organizes Tibetan Momo cooking classes for interested travellers. After the lessons, they encourage the travellers to help them make the Momos for practical experience. So we promised them to be their Momo disciples on our next trip before walking towards the Zoo.

3. The Park Restaurant (A place of authentic Thai food in North Bengal Tourism):

The Zoo walk made me pretty weary, if not all, of my party. The kids were ever energetic. I needed a place to sit down for an hour and be lazy (being lazy feels like being me, can’t help it). But it was not possible till we reached The Park Restaurant. We had to buy a few woolens from the Chauk Bazar before settling down in the restaurant.

The Park Restaurant was established back in 1993 by a local named Deep. The place specializes in Thai and Chinese cuisine. We had ordered Raw Papaya Salad, Dry Chilli Chicken, Crispy Chicken, Chicken Hakka Noodles after the beverages of Fresh Lime Soda, Chilled Beer, and Long Island Tea. Unfortunately, we were restricted to venture out on sampling other specialties because of the inability of our children to eat hot and spicy food.

To me, personally, the Raw Papaya Salad was the clear winner. The rich tanginess of the salad balanced by the crispiness of the peanuts were absolute delights to the food lover in me.

A word of caution here – The Park Restaurant seemed a bit pricy, so, if looking for budget eating options, this one can be left out unless you are eager to sample proper Thai food more than the other Oriental dishes in this restaurant.

4. Keventer’s:

I understand that Keventer’s or Kev’s has a rich heritage in serving the British gentry in the past. And it’s one of the best restaurants in Darjeeling that boasts of well-prepared continental cuisine, basically cold cuts, but it failed to satisfy me. Also, the crowd of patrons hankering for the open space with limited seating arrangements outside was a major put-off for me (Call us the extremely highbrow and obnoxious people, who can’t mingle with ‘tourist’ crowds, but that’s how we, the Kolkatafusion people are as travellers. We accept our vice. So, now Peace!).

I missed ‘Boney’s’ all along. The food was okayish, if not good, although not promptly served. The kids had Cheese Omelette and Scrambled Eggs along with fruit juice for their breakfast. We had chicken salami sandwich burgers, toasts, and a mixed platter of fried portions of bacon, sausages, hams and salamis. The hot chocolate was well done, though!

5. Alice Villa:

To all our food adventures during mornings and afternoons, Alice Villa, our abode for this time’s Darjeeling visit, offered solace to our tired digestive systems. We invariably ordered soul comforting food like Rice or Roti, Daal, Daal Fries, Mixed Vegetable Curries and Potato Fries (simple Alu Bhaja) for the dinners. We also sampled the famous Alice Villa pudding, but we didn’t like it much, maybe because the sweetness is on the higher side.

Although we wanted to sample food in Penang Restaurant, Kunga Restaurant, and Boney’s, we couldn’t cover much. However, we didn’t return empty-handed from our yearly food pilgrimage in Darjeeling and that memory would keep us upbeat for another year till we visit again.

If you are in and around New Town/ Rajarhat, Kolkata during make sure to book a table at 6 Ballygunge Place New Town – you won’t regret it.

When I shifted to New Town, the budding outskirts of our Kolkata, I found it to be a really peaceful and clean place to reside. However, the gastronome in me was disheartened to the core of the heart – forget about a star cuisine, this place lacked the options for street food (which Kolkata is famous for).  But, that was in 2013, and now we are blessed with restaurants like 6 Ballygunge Place, Throttle Shrottle, Traffic Gastropub, Orient, Country Roads and many more.

Poila Baisakh is knocking at our door, the festival during which the Bengalis cherish traditional culinary delights, so, why not dedicate this week to the food lovers?

How Is The Ambiance Of 6 Ballygunge Place New Town?

Located at Ecosuite Business Tower, Action Area II, New Town 6 Ballygunge Place Rajarhat is spread over 6000 square feet (shares the space with The Wall) and has the seating capacity of 84.

From the moment you enter this place, you will get a vibe of traditional Bengali environment. The wooden door, the waiting area, the wall paintings, the furniture, and the cutleries – everything will remind you of an era when the rich Zamindars of Kolkata used to welcome their revered guests with splendour, where every artefact reflected the warmth of the refined lady of the house, who used to supervise each minute detail with the eye of an eagle.

6 Ballygunge Place has their branches in Salt Lake, Ballygunge and various other locations of Kolkata, but the ambience of the 6 Ballygunge Place New Town is something to really cherish.

Without any exaggeration, we can say that the Bengali culinary skills are one of the best and 6 Ballyygunge Place does absolute justice to the age-old dishes. In fact, they have gone a step ahead and have added some delicious, creative dishes to their menu.

What’s On The Menu Of 6 Ballygunge Place New Town?

6 Ballygunge Place Thali
The Grand Sumptuous Thali. Source: lbb.in

You can go for their buffet, which is available every day of the week and at a reasonable cost (INR 585 to INR 740, excluding tax). The sumptuous buffet mostly includes a number of options – fish, mutton, chicken, rice, luchi, and sweets along with other dishes.

However, we personally prefer going for the ala-carte menu as we cannot think of visiting 6 Ballygunge Place and not eating Gondhoraj Chicken and Dhakai Pora Mangsho with Steam Rice.

You might be laughing at me for this but even if you do not have an appetite for a starter, try one (most are good, depending on your preference of non-veg and veg) for the sauce at least. It is a dhaniya (coriander leaves) sauce, but the fresh aroma of mustard is so enticing that no one can escape it!

Some of the most recommended dishes

Shukto –  Bengali bhoj has to start with a teto (bitter tasting items)* but if the teto is like 6 Ballygung Places’ teto, you will crave to start with it.

RELATED: Shukto From MIL’s Kitchen  – To know more on hot to cook this heathy starter at home.

Jhuri Alubhaja
Jhuri Alubhaja

Jhuri Alubhaja – It’s the authentic Bengali alu bhaja (potato fries) and the quantity is pretty good.

Narkel Postor Bora – Finely grated coconut adds to the charm of the postor (poppy seeds) bora from Ma’s kitchen.

Steamed Aam Kasundi Murgi – Chicken perfectly blended with kasundi and is a steamed preparation. A must try for diet-freaks.

Bhetki Paturi - 6 Ballygunge Place
Bhetki Paturi

Bhetki Paturi – Soft and juicy and surely one of the best that I had till date.

Pur Bhora Doi Potol – Another traditional dish with a contemporary touch is a must try for the veg lovers. (My hubby is pointed gourd/potol lover, so thankfully we had got the opportunity to taste this dish and we don’t regret doing it).

Hilsa – if you have those sudden cravings for Hilsa in the summers and you know you won’t get it in the market, just give a call to 6 Ballygunge Place and pick any of their Hilsa preparations to whet your appetite.

Dhakai Pora Mutton - 6 Ballygunge Place
Dhakai Pora Mutton

Dhakai Pora Mangsho – As already mentioned, it is highly recommended if you love spicy gravy of mutton. The texture of the gravy is picture perfect.

Dhonepata Chicken – If you prefer chicken instead of mutton and crab, you must try this.

Daab Chingri  – This delectable recipe of Chingri with a perfect fusion of Daaber Saansh (tender coconut pulp)is one of the most recommended dishes of the 6 Ballygunge Place.

We love to end this sumptuous meal with a “Nolen gurer ice cream” and we would highly recommend it.

What About The Staff?

The entire charm of this restaurant is enhanced by the cordial and supportive staff. They are always there at your service with a smile on their face. But, due to the extreme rush in the weekends, sometimes they are overburdened and you might tend to think, “this is not how they are on other days.”

We have an innate aversion towards restaurants in malls – that doesn’t mean we completely turn our backs to them. But we only visit a restaurant in shopping complexes, when they are new, like Traffic Gastropub in CC2, that also was back in 2014.

Orient CC2 Kolkata
The Orient CC2 Entrance

Thus, in spite of visiting City Centre 2 in multiple occasions, we never tried the food at The Orient Restaurant on the ground floor. I think, it might also be due to the poor experiences we had at Blue Nile and Aafra in CC2.

On A Date?

It was one of those mundane days in our lives, the kid had left for school, hubby was preparing for office and I was trying to sort things before hitting my workstation, when suddenly I had this realization – we haven’t been on a date for ages!

Thoughts and wishes are not meant to be supressed, so boom! I barged in to my husband’s room and demanded, “When was the last time we took each other on a date?” The poor man was taken aback. However, we continued with some typical overacted husband-wife drama and finally he suggested that we can go to The Orient. The restaurant was still untouched by us, and it was also close by so we could return before the kid was home – everything was just perfect barring the fact that we were SUPER APPREHENSIVE about the FOOD.

The Ambience

The entrance of the restaurant might not allure you much, but from the moment you enter it, you feel the vibes of an authentic Oriental restaurant. It’s a small place which the owner has arranged very strategically. Thought not enclosed within cabins, each table has privacy. The ambiance looks vibrant in the red and black combination with Chinese characters on the walls.

The Food

The food served here has a unique taste, and though the ambience conforms more to Chinese tastes, it serves authentic Oriental food with a tinge of the Chef’s personal style. And the best part is they are open to suggestions and you can customize the food to a great extent to suit your taste buds. Each dish is cooked with utmost care and has optimum use of spices.

Coming to the dishes that we would recommend:

Philippino pork ribs adobe

Consists of 90% pork fat and is a delicacy for pork’s fat lovers. Each bite melts in your mouth leaving a lingering felling of richness. Not suitable for health geeks!

Ginger and Pepper Fried Rice

Since we were in a mood to try out spicy food, this food perfectly suited us. The burnt smell is perfect for people who are ready to try something beyond the typical fried rice.

Lobster in Garlic Pepper Sauce and Red Wine

The juicy lobster is served in the most mouth-watering manner, and is cooked with apt amount of spices. If it was not for the cost, I would love to visit this place again and again for this particular dish.

The showstopper – Ice Cream

It’s a flower with chocolate petals which blooms slowly as the hot chocolate is poured over it and slowly reveals the white ice cream bud at the center. We were so mesmerized by the presentation that for a while the taste took a back seat – just like when Aishwarya used to be on the screen, we used to be so zapped by her looks that we could hardly bother about her acting (Disclaimer: that was her in the starting days!). Having said that, it’s a perfect dessert for people with a sweet tooth.

Buffet

Timing: 12:30 pm to 4 pm

With unlimited soft drinks – INR 799

4 pegs of hard liquor or 2 pints of beer- INR 999

The Service

The dips

The staff is courteous and while they respect your privacy, they also make sure to attend you promptly. We visited on a weekday, so it was nearly empty when we entered and we received a very warm service. One of the best aspects of their service was that they gave a patient hearing to our requirements and once they understood it, they suggested us dishes which perfectly satisfied our taste buds.

Christmas in my city Kolkata is always special. Owing to its long colonial association, Kolkata have imbibed a lot of cultural influences of the British. The influence is evident in the way the city, specially the Central Kolkata, Park Street, Bow Barracks, deck themselves up during the Christmas and New Year fortnight. It’s a time for Kolkatans, to start baking at homes as well visiting the heritage bakeries of Kolkata for tasting the some of the best Christmas confectioneries.

The city is suddenly abuzz, cheering up to the holy occasion. So, when all are looking forward to the last week of December, can Kolkata Fusion be far behind? Here’s presenting the 4 iconic bakeries of Kolkata which you should not miss visiting this Christmas, at all.

  1. Nahoum’s

Nahoum Israel Mordecai founded the store around 117 years ago. Till date the shop and its goodies have not lost their dedicated customers. The fruit cake, plum cake, brownies, white chocolates, dark chocolate bars, or the black forest cakes, taste the same as they tasted before. The sweetness is subtle. The morsels just melt in your mouths in no time.

We, the contributors of KolkataFusion, recently went to Calcutta 64, a café in Kolkata for a work meet and to discuss our future plans regarding our website. We had told you earlier that KolkataFusion is a legacy that we wish to leave back for our children or forthcoming generations of Bengalis, who would perhaps forget what a physical Adda looks like. We wish that they would be able to relate to the topics in our quaint virtual Adda Zone and understand what Adda stood for in erstwhile Bengali society.

So, for our meet, we zeroed in on this cafe in Salt Lake, Kolkata where you can discuss, have engaging conversations or listen to live gigs over food with your choice of coffee or tea. In short, Calcutta 64 has the ambience of the quintessential Bengali Adda.

At the right corner of the entrance gate, there are a few wooden benches and desks serving as the waiting zone or smoking zone of the patrons entering the café. As we entered, we were greeted by a small showcase displaying luring cupcakes and muffins. On the other side, there were the seating arrangements comprising of sleek tables and chairs, just enough to keep your book, planner or laptop on them while having your food.

At the rear end of where we sat, there was a wide space with some stools and guitar testifying the live musical events which take place here, at times. There was a cute book rack, too, but since we were focused on our meeting, we didn’t dare to look at the rack lest we fall in the trap and start reading the books instead of discussions.

At first, we ordered an Americano and a Second Flush Tea because one of us like coffee and the other one had a bad headache, so a strong liquor tea was something she wanted then. Both the drinks were just in place, perfectly done. Two tiny miny cookies were also served with the tea.

Chicken Sizzler Calcutta 64
That’s the steak and here’s the sizzler Photo Courtesy: KolkataFusion

Up came our laptop and planner and we started discussing our blog. Being foodies, we obviously couldn’t focus without food, and we wanted to try out varieties. So, one of us ordered mixed chicken sizzlers and the other ordered chicken steak with mashed potatoes. The sizzler tasted good, the pepper was a bit on the higher side but then our palates got conditioned and certified it as umami. We guess that’s how it should taste like though we had a problem with the high pepper due to personal health reasons. The steak platter tasted awesome. The chicken pieces in both the dishes were juicy and tender, instantly melting in our mouths.

Both the dishes were pretty filling. The quantity served was absolutely great. We would also like to mention the service, which was polite and quick. We stayed in that place for about two and a half hours, took our own time to discuss and savour the food in the meanwhile. Just when we decided to call it a day, we ordered a fresh lime soda and first flush tea. The fresh lime soda tasted usual but the first flush tea emerged as the winner. The leaves were perfectly steeped. The quantity was great, too.

One of us left Calcutta 64 with a pack of little chocolate cupcakes wishing that they would bring smiles to her little one’s face.

If you are arranging a get together with your friends, or brief work discussions with your team or client, Calcutta 64 can be your next venue. The hot cuppa coffee and thin-crust pizzas, or sandwiches or all-day breakfast or a chosen sumptuous lunch, can add new dimensions to your meet. Bon Appetit!!

It was a sultry afternoon. As we entered through the gates of Oudh 1590, Deshapriya Park branch, we were greeted with a thumri playing at the background somewhere.

Babul mora naihar chhuto hi jaaye….Char kahaar mile, mori doliyaa sajave
Mora aapnaa begana chhuto jaay!
Naihar chhuto hi jaay………..”

Amidst the excitement of trying out Awadhi Dastarkhwan (cuisine in Persian) a sadness veiled over my mind because of the connection of this beautiful thumri with Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last nawab of Awadh (Oudh) who was exiled in Kolkata.

He wasn’t happy to leave Lucknow but he brought a piece of Lucknow with him when he started staying in the Metiabruz area in Kolkata.

Known as one of the gourmet kings of Awadh, the Nawab introduced ‘Dum-Pukht’ or slow cooking method which was completely new in Kolkata, then.

As he was forced to live within a tight pension, the lavish ingredients of the Lucknawi gharana were replaced with locally available but identical ingredients. That was when the Portuguese import, potatoes, were started to be used in the Wajid Ali Shah’s customized version of Awadhi Biriyani. The same potatoes which granted the iconic status to the ‘Kolkata Biriyani’.

The speciality of the Awadhi Cuisine

Cooking is done over slow fire or ‘dum pukht’ which concentrates on preserving the nutrients of the food in the process. Its not very rich in spices like the Mughlai cuisine.

Customizations done by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah:  As the nawab did not have the freedom to spend beyond a fixed stipend granted to him by the British, he patronized on using ingredients like local fishes, ducks, fowls, vegetables and locally available spices for preparing the meals and these local ingredients were beautifully blended with the original style of Awadhi ‘dum-pukhts’.

The dishes we sampled in Oudh 1590, Deshapriya Park:

Starters

Chicken Zafrani Kabab – a tandoori preparation of chicken marinated with yoghurt, cream and saffron

Mutton Galawati Kabab – a shallow tawa fried preparation with mutton keema marinated in Awadhi spices.

Both the varieties were soft, succulent and melted in mouths as we tucked them in accompanied by Soda Sikanji.

Main Course: Awadhi Handi Biriyani – Mutton Biriyani slow cooked with Awadhi spices, predominantly cinnamon and cardamom.

Murgh Pardah Biriyani – A layered chicken biriyani with common spices.

Shikari Hansa Handi Biriyani – Slow cooked duck biriyani with an earthen aroma left by the earthen vessel in which it is cooked.

Murgh Yakhni Pulao – A pulao speciality slow cooked in chicken broth.

The meats in the biriyanis and the pulao were extremely soft and delectable. We were sticking to the Biriyanis but my toddler daughter disliked the slight hotness in their tastes thus ordered the Yakhni Pulao for her. The quantities of the pulao and biriyanis were quite a lot, one earthen pot of each is enough to satiate the hunger of two people unless you are a glutton!!

To accompany our assorted biriyanis and pulao we ordered Murgh Irani Salaan.

The biriyanis were accompanied with raita and burhani as well.

The delicious dastarkhwan filled our tummies but more importantly our hearts. The food served in earthen pots, the overall ambience with ghazals, thumris and khayals playing in the background, the chandeliers enigmatically illuminating the spaces transported us to the Awadhi era for the entire span we stayed there relishing our food.

If you are looking forward to experience the Awadhi Dastarkhwan too at its best avatar, please drop in to Oudh 1590, Deshapriya Park, Kolkata or in any other of their outlets in Kolkata. Bon Appetit!! Maze Karein!!

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word ‘Bohemian’ means ‘A socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts.’ Much like the meaning, the restaurant I am going to talk about today, too, has the special characteristics of non-conformism in the menu it offers. You can call them a fusion, a deviation or a totally new form of culinary art – the choice lies with you.

The restaurant is a brainchild of Chef Joy Banerjee who have twisted in the Continental cuisine with local ingredients and tempered with the Bengali spices. The art experimentations had been given familiar names like Kosha Mushroom/Mangsho/Shorshe Chingri Crostinis, Mochar Ghonto Augratin, Kancha Lonka Mangsho, Chilli Pickle & Cheese Baked Crabwith Kolmi Greensto name a few.

It was a summer evening when we decided to visit Bohemian. As we panted up the stairs, we were welcomed with a toothpick tucked diced watermelon with crème. Our weariness momentarily vanished. Feeling refreshed, we decided to try out the flavoured fuchkas as starters and ordered for Hilsa Fuchka and the Crab Prawn Fuchka. The flavours were absolutely stunning. A second helping of them was instantly called for.

Flavoured Fuchkas

As appetizers, we tried out daab chingri dynamites and vodka prawn. Our taste buds would remain indebted to them forever.

Then came in the main dishes we chose from equally tantalizing names, – Kanchalonka Mangsho, Pork Vindaloo and Murshidabadi Barbecued Chicken with Pita Breads. I simply can’t describe how they tasted. It felt as if all the spices performed synchronized dancing. In fact, when I took the last morsel of my helping of Kanchalonka Mangsho, I decided to stop calling them dishes and call them art forms instead. Well, I am not able to give a snap of the main dishes here as I was so lost in tasting them that I forgot to take a snap home with me. A search in the world wide web did not help me either!! Gosh!!

In the dessert section, we experimented with Malpua Cheesecake, Cigar Coffee Mousse, and Pantua Baked Alaska.

It’s needless to say that each of them tasted marvellous as well as unique.

I sadly confess that we had missed out on a lot while we were sampling these platters and haven’t found an opportunity yet to go there, and sample the other signature dishes and let our sense of taste do the tango.

Don’t miss out like us. This Poila Baishakh, if you are a food enthusiast, head out to Bohemian restaurant and let your taste buds perform tango and a Chhou dance in synchronization, together.

Trust us, you won’t be forgetting the unique experience ever in your life.
