A beautifully written article by Edaan Ghosh. It’ll encourage you to study more about this lesser-known Children’s Writer – Subhadra Sengupta. By the end of the article, you might end up adding some of her books to your Amazon cart.

Subhadra Sengupta was an Indian writer based in Delhi. She was born in June 1959 and had a master’s degree in history. She was the winner of Sahitya’s Akademi’s 2015 Bal Sahitya Puraskar. Of the many books, she wrote, I have read only a few. And have thoroughly enjoyed them. One of her books, Mystery of the House of Pigeons, was adapted into a television series for Doordarshan as Khoj Khazana Khojer. Most of her books are genres of historical fiction and non-fiction. But she also wrote travelogues, comic strips and detective stories. She lost her battle against Covid19 in the year 2021.

A few books I have read are Let’s Go Time Travelling, Let’s Go Time Travelling Again, Kings and Queens, A Flag, A Song and A Pinch of Salt and Mostly Ghostly Stories.

Let’s go Time Travelling

Let's go Time Travelling and Let's go Time Travelling Again
Let’s go Time Travelling. PC.: funkyrainbow

The book Let’s go Time Travelling describes the lifestyle of people from the Harappan Civilization to the British era. Its sequel, Let’s Go Time Travelling Again, gives us a broad picture of the various occupations of ancient India. I loved these two books as they had a lot of information about ancient civilizations depicted humorously.

Kings and Queens

Kings and Queens is a book about famous and mighty emperors and empresses, like Chandragupta Maurya, the ruler of Magadha, was the founder of the Mauryan Dynasty. And Razia Sultan was an empress of the Slave Dynasty. Although she was a woman, that didn’t stop her from becoming a great ruler. Krishnadeva Raya of the Tuluva Dynasty was a powerful king of Vijayanagar. He was a fierce fighter, a book lover and even wrote poetry. Noor Jahan was the youngest of all the wives of Jahangir. But with sheer willpower, personality, courage & political skill, she gradually became the centre of power.

A Flag, A Song and A Pinch of Salt

A Flag, A Song and A Pinch of Salt tell us about the lives and achievements of famous freedom fighters like Ambedkar, Abul Kalam Azad, Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu and many more. I learnt a lot about many freedom fighters I didn’t know previously.

He has an extensive interest in the people, culture, religion and occupation of ancient India and also the world. While searching for books on the history of India for young readers, he and his mother stumbled upon the books by Subhadra Sengupta. India is celebrating 75th Independence Day this year. We, the KolkataFusion team are honoured to present to you a poem by our Guest blogger, Diptanu Chakraborty. The kid has not only understood the meaning of freedom but has beautifully put it in words. COVID-19 has put shackles on our freedom and we are dying to go out. How the country must have felt when it was under the restrictions of foreigners?

When I can enjoy freedom

I have no need of staying home.

I get to go outside, get to have fun

Until the day is done.

Covid has made my life worse

My freedom has gone, what a loss !!

The wind runs merrily,

Pulls along the old clouds crookedly.

The streams surf speedily,

The birds chirp splendidly.

They are all enjoying freedom,

But I am missing out, in boredom.

I wonder what pain people felt somehow

Once upon a time, there was a town named Contigo. That place had a huge museum and a monstrous bank. One night, a gang came to the town. They looted those two places. After they had finished, a bell rang— TRI……IINGGGGG!!!! The police were all around. The gang- leader told the others,” We should hide in our secret base!”

They had a secret base in a nearby city. They secretly went to their base and hid themselves and the items they stole.

There was a police officer with six friends in Contigo. They were searching for the gang and the items they stole. They saw a man who saw the truck that belonged to the gang. The investigators asked him the number plate of the vehicle. The man replied,” The truck’s number was- HEM42MC1439. It was a red number plate with white letters on it.”  One of the six friends told the others,” There is a chance that this information may help.” So, they resumed the investigation.

While investigating, they found a numberplate broken into pieces. They matched the broken pieces and could identify the numberplate. They realized that this was the original numberplate of the gang’s truck. The officer said suspiciously,” They threw it may be because they didn’t want their vehicle to be easily identified.”

Eventually the 7 friends found a wee bit of information from the number plate. The information was sent to the news channels so that if people see the truck, they could easily identify it and alert he police. Finally, one day, someone called and reported about the thieves’ secret hide-out.

The police officer and his six friends got ready to catch them. They followed the caller’s directions and reached the secret lair. They entered carefully. The room was dark inside and they heard low grunts. They kept looking for the sound source. They found a door. When opened, they saw a few hanging clothes. They moved those aside and discovered a secret tunnel. As they stepped in, SWOOOOOOSH!!!…they were teleported to a secret arena.

In front of them was the gang they were searching for and a huge Gollum stood beside them. They also discovered another Gollum standing right behind them. Their Gollum stepped in front of them and started fighting.

The good Gollum almost got defeated. Just then, the friends distracted the evil Gollum. The good Gollum healed itself and defeated the evil one. Hen the gang leader busted the good Gollum with his Bazooka!

The seven friends started fighting. The gang leader tried to escape but got hit by a stone thrown by one of the friends. He fell!

Everyone was arrested and put behind bars. The treasure stolen was finally put back to where it was. The police officer and his friends were praised a lot.

On Earth Day 2021, our 12-year-old guest blogger, Diptanu Chakraborty, has beautifully and lucidly expressed, how we can protect our nature. It doesn’t require much on our parts – just some small acts can protect our environment, and give our kids a better place to live.

Though Earth’s age is more than 4.5 billion years, we started celebrating its birthday just a few decades back. It was a conscientious effort to make the inhabitants of this Earth, that’s us, aware about her natural bounty and beauty. The Earth Day pledges to keep the planet beautiful, as it was, when it was formed.

Before we share the poem, a brief history

US Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson with 20 million American families had first celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 1970. They took to the streets to raise environmental awareness among people. In 2016, the event got acceptance by many other countries and it’s a world event celebrated on April 22, every year.

Earth Day 2021 Theme

The theme of Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth. The focus is primarily on examining natural processes, finding out new green technologies and innovative ways to restore the world’s ecosystems

Happy Earth Day

-Diptanu Chakraborty

Earth Day Earth Day

It is Earth’s Birthday!

When we wash hands turn off tappy,

Save water makes the earth HAPPY.

Turn off the light nicely,

Save Electricity gives Earth a Smiley.

We should not pollute nor litter,

We never can make our Earth bitter.

We should have a nice solution,

We should not give the Earth Pollution.

Planting trees is good for the air,

Let this not be very rare.

Amazon is burning can you see

Oxygen is less but we cant feel.

Licypriya and Greta can you hear,

Our poor Earth is in fear.

Don’t use plastic all the time

On clothes and jute spend your dime.

Birds dance in water and drink it too

In summer make it a job to do.

Never ever waste food,

This act is not good.

To save Earth these are the ways,

Everyone say “Happy Earth Day!! ”

I am The Black Diamond Express. I am a superfast weekly express from Howrah station Kolkata in West Bengal to Dhanbad. My inaugural run was on 1st July 2013. I am Coalfield express’s sibling as we both have the same loco WAP 7 of Howrah electric loco shed. We both travel from Howrah to Dhanbad. Being a daily train, I am busy as I have to take the passengers back to their homes and on their journeys every day. I love children a lot – and they love me so much.

Enters Coronavirus

One day I heard the driver was talking to a person about a lockdown. Some virus named Coronavirus had come from China. People were dying, so lockdown was started. I was shed with all my friends like Coalfield, Jan Shatabdi, Poorva, Shatabdi, Duronto and Rajdhani. The driver patted me and said that we need to be safe or else we will fall sick, so all trains were closed. I felt very sad and was crying. I was missing the driver, all the children and also the passengers. I was also missing the outside view of Nature like green trees, crops, the rivers flowing under the bridge. Seeing me so sad Coalfield said ‘Knedona knedona…sob kichu thik hobe…amar babula’. (Don’t cry, everything will be fine).

Howrah Loco Shed

I was in the shed for a long time, missing all the good golden memories I had while I travelled. I remembered women carrying babies in their laps, the first journey of children. And I also often thought of a small child named Roopo, who really loved me and used to travel from Asansol to Howrah. Roopo always said hello to me, waving his hand, and shared his stories and songs with me.

While we were in the shed, Shatabdi was called for his special duty. So, I called cousin WAP 5 to take Shatabdi and make children happy and help the passengers. I felt gloomy and thought, ‘When will my turn come?’ Before leaving, Shatabdi gave me a peck on the cheek. Some trains were released.

Finally….

One day, on 12th February, my ‘annaprasan’ started. I got new coaches. I was thrilled and on the 13th, I was released to do my special duty. All the children were happy. I was the Howrah Dhanbad Special train who wanted to give happy memories. When I went out on the tracks, I felt so glad as I finally got the fresh air of Nature. I looked around and saw trees dancing with happiness, rivers clapping, clouds were crying with joy and all the plants were hugging. The passengers again started travelling. They were all wearing masks. They were happy to see me. All the kids were proud to see me because I was back. All the compartments were back. The AC compartments made me chilly while the sweet breezes from the Non-AC Compartments uplifted my mood.

I am looking forward to seeing Roopo travel in my coaches again. I love that child Roopo and he too loves me. The Boy Roopo Visited Me & spoke to the engine driver and I felt happy. I want to continue my journey and make everyone happy again.

There was a dark graveyard in the jungle. It was so silent. No one visited there. Three children went hiking. There were two girls and one boy. They saw the graveyard. They could hear wolves howling at a distance. ‘’Ooooo.”

Mary: “That’s such a scary grayeyard.”

Browdie: “I am so scared that I am shivering”.

Bob: “I don’t believe in ghosts! Let’s discover the graveyard. This is going to be a mission.”

They all went to the graveyard silently. They walked slowly.

Kid story of Ghosts
Sketch by Diptanu

Mary: “Is this a ghost jungle?”

Browdie:  “I am so scared that I am shivering”.

Bob: “Come on! Lets go ahead.”

Mary and Browdie both said, “Best of luck to you Bob! We are leaving, but you can go ahead.”

Bob: “I am not going alone. We are all friends. Hold my hands! Together we will discover this graveyard.”

Mary and Browdie – “Okay Bob. Three of us will go ahead.”

They started exploring the graveyard.

Suddenly they saw a skeleton and got very scared. Mary screamed loudly. Her voice echoed through the entire graveyard. And suddenly behind them they saw a ghost moving.

Mary: “I was correct. This graveyard is a ghost Jungle. It’s a haunted jungle.”

Then they again heard the wolf howl and turned round and saw the wolf standing on a tombstone.

Bob pulled his sleeve and went to fight with the wolf. Bob had got a firecracker that could scare the wolf. The wolf charged towards them.

Bob: “Don’t fear when Bob is here!”

Bob threw the firecracker at the wolf. It bursted and the wolf went flying high up and fell down. The wolf was in pain and was crying in pain.

Mary: “Poor wolf! I will put bandages on you and you will heal.”

Suddenly the wolf started talking. “ Thank you soo much Mary !. But this is hurting so much. Let me open my costume and you can put medicines.”

Mary looked inside the costume and shouted, “ Bertie !! What are you doing here? You are the Wolf!!”

Bob: “Bertie! I thought it’s a real wolf.”

Browdie: “You gave us a shock. You made a fool of us. Serves you right, you tried to fool us”

Mary: “Enough of this. Bertie is in pain. We have to give him medicines.”

Bertie: “Thank you, the medicines made me feel better. I made my own ‘Graveyard Theme Park’ and planned to have fun with you all. It was just for fun and not for attacking.”

Browdie: “Sorry Bertie! We thought you are a wolf. Were the ghosts also false?”

Bertie: “Yesss!! They were all holograms and the wolf howling was from a speaker.”

Bob: “So this haunted graveyard was a prank?”

Bertie: “Okay now let’s start the party!”

Animals always excite me. I love all animals. That was the reason my parents decided to take me on a safari tour to Madhya Pradesh.

One fine morning we reached Nagpur by train. From Nagpur, we took a cab to Pench National Park. The resort was just near the entrance gate of the Pench National Park. There were different types of trees everywhere. I was thrilled.

Pench Tiger Reserve

The next morning, at dawn, we started for our safari. A jeep was waiting for us at the resort gate.

I was very excited. As we entered the national park, first, we saw many langurs eating leaves of trees and jumping from one tree to another. There were many spotted deers too. I also saw a few jackals, sambars and a barking deer. The most surprising and exciting part was when we spotted the tigress “Collarwali” just after entering the park. I think I was very lucky. I saw thousands of deers. The guide uncle told us that the deers and the langurs are friends. They help each other by supplying food and warning when the tigers approach.

The animal that thrilled me the most was a spider. The spider’s size, I think, was that of a sparrow. I saw many birds like Black Drongo, White-throated Kingfisher, Indian Scops Owls, Indian Roller, Peacocks, Parakeets, Orioles, Oriental Magpie Robin, Common Hoopoe and Cormorants. Definitely, this safari was amazing.

From Pench, we went to the Kanha National Park. In the Kanha National Park, we saw a Sambar running fast. It was so quick that my father could not take a picture of it. I think it got scared by the roaring of our jeep. I saw a barking deer eating grass quietly. Oh! I saw a few Barasinghas. They had magnificent antlers.

From Kanha, we further went to Bandhavgarh. The vegetation in Bandhavgarh was much different. Here it was mostly grassland and the area was hilly. On this safari, I saw very few animals. I saw a herd of bisons and very beautiful butterflies. I saw a huge statue of Lord Vishnu in a sleeping position. The statue was so big that my mother was unable to take a proper picture of it. I also saw a horse stable used by kings on our way to the statue of Vishnu.

The day before our safari in Bandhavgarh, we went to visit the Palace of Maharaja of Rewa. I saw a stuffed tiger and tigress shot by the Maharaja. The armour of Maharaja was on display. We were allowed to lift the guns, swords and spears used by the Maharajas. I took a spear, which was much lighter than the gun used for hunting. The gun was so so heavy that my mother could not carry it even for a minute. Well, for me, I could not hold it without help more than a second. I cannot imagine how Kings hunted for hours with it.

The safaris in Madhya Pradesh were blissful and I loved doing them. And I also dream of doing more in the future.

It was a Saturday morning (25th May, 2019) when I sat with my mother and brother for breakfast just before going for my tutorial classes. We were discussing about Kolkata’s hallmark food joints and my mother came up with a great idea of a North Kolkata Food Crawl. In which we would explore famous and heritage eateries of the North Kolkata walking from one place to another, eating some good food on the way.

Accordingly, we began our food crawl from right in front of the Manicktalla fish market at around 5.30 p.m. Walking down the Vivekananda Road we first encountered a joint called ‘Chanchala’ famous for its Kulfis but because of my brother’s reluctance we had to skip the idea of having kulfi and move to our next stop.

The next joint on our list was the iconic sweet shop in Kolkata, ‘Girish Ch. De & Nakur Ch. Nandy’ as we turned left from Vivekananda Road to Ramdulal Sarkar Street.

Girish Ch Dey & Nakur Ch Nandy

After gorging on some exquisite sweets we turned back to Vivekananda Road and took a short Bus ride to Hatibagan. From Hatibagan we took an auto-rickshaw (tuktuk) ride to Shovabazar. There we headed to one of the pioneers of Bengali Fast Food iconic joint ‘Mitra Café’.

We found it crowded with foodies who were binging on to their iconic delicacies. Somehow we got a place to sit and ordered for Diamond Kaviraji (Coverage), a classic fish fry whose coating is done with eggs.

Kabiraji

In the meanwhile it started raining heavily and our plans got affected but our foodie spirit wasn’t at all dampened. When the rain stopped for a while we got out and took shelter at the bus stop. After waiting for a little while, a bus came which we boarded to get dropped at the Shyambazar 5-point crossing. There we hit the ‘New Punjabi Hotel’ which is famous as ‘Golbari’. As we felt pretty full at that time so we picked up Mutton Kasha and Chapati for dinner.

Gol Barir kosha mangsho

Just opposite ‘Golbari’ is ‘Haridas Modak’ an old sweet shop from where my mother used to buy sweets as a child. As my mother felt nostalgic she insisted upon us going there and we happily agreed and picked up some  sweets from there as desserts after dinner.

Haridash Mistanno Bhandar

Here our food crawl comes to an end and we got the desired bus to get back home. It was a great experience to explore such legendary food joints around the North of the city and taste some amazing food.

One day when he was swimming in the lake he met other dragons. But then dragon had trouble. He called out ‘Oh ! This water has reminded me I need to go!’ So he ran into the woods. He asked the animals and bugs. He asked a cockroach but cockroach said ‘I cant help you, there are many kids who want to ride on me.’ The dragon said ‘Oh!’

Mosquito

Then the dragon asked a mosquito but the mosquito said ‘No way! I cant. I don’t know where the bathroom is.’

Ant

Then the dragon asked an ant but the ant said, ‘I need to go too to the bathroom and all my friends need to go too.’ The ant asked, ‘Did you ask the cockroach?’

The dragon said ‘ I did but he said there are many children who want to ride on him.’

Then the dragon, the ants and the fly went to the tiger and asked him.

The tiger said, ‘I know the bathroom. Follow me!’

So the tiger showed the dragon, the ants and the fly the way to the bathroom. Then they saw the bathroom.

The dragon got in the bathroom, the fly got in the bathroom even the ants got in the bathroom. When they came out they all thanked the tiger.

‘Thank you tiger !’

Tiger said, ‘you are welcome. Whenever you come bathroom hunting just call me’.

The dragon said, ‘like I always say whenever you need to go, you need to go.’

And they all went back happily.

The End
Thank You
